Short Doorways at Aztec Ruins

Mistaken as Aztec ruins, these ruins are actually the work of the Ancestral Pueblo (formerly known as the Anasazi). The ruins were built and occupied over a 200 year period starting in the 12th century. It is believed that the ruins were abandoned and the people migrated southward due to climate change in the 1200's which lead to shorter growing seasons and drought. Cold War Bunker Air Locks

I'm not sure what the intention of this bunker was but it wasn't bulit for long term occupancy. Although it did house 72 cots, there wasn't storage space for food and water. This is the exit side of the double door air locks where enviornmental suits hung from the poles. Adak Alaska, USA

Building Connector

This is one of many hallways of its kind that connect the now abandoned military buildings on Adak island, Alaska. The Army/Navy base was originally established in 1942 to fight against the Japanese who were invading the Aleutian Islands. After WWII, the base became a cold war base used monitor Russian activities. By 1997, when the base closed, many of the structures/towns had been demolished and buried. What remained of the base was sold to the Aleute Corporation and left to the elements. Adak, Alaska 2018

The Inner Workings of Dredge #4

The largest wooden hulled gold mining bucket dredge in North America was run by electricity drawn from 31mi(50km) away. Designed by the Marion Steam Shovel Company, and built for the Canadian Klondike Mining Company in 1912, the dredge processed 18,000 cubic yards of material a day. The tailing piles these dredges make, scar the landscape for miles. Decommissioned in 1959, the dredge had unearthed 9 tons of gold grossing $8.6 million. It is now a historic site.

Kitchen in Bodie

In 1876 a deposit of profitable gold ore was found in Bodie turning it into a boomtown. By 1879 the population had increased from a few miners to a town of 5000-7000 people and 2000 buildings. The town produced approximately $34MM in gold over its lifetime. The decline came as fast as the boom and by the end of 1880, the town was in decline with the early miners leaving Bodie for other promising finds. By 1912, the last Bodie newspaper was printed, In 1917 the Bodie railroad was scrapped. The last mine closed in 1942 with the onset of WWII and was never reopened following the war. In 1961 the town was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 1962 the state turned it into a State Historic Park with 170 buildings remaining. The park is kept in a state of "arrested decay". Manufactured between 1925 and 1932, this handy machine served the Lucky Strike Mine near Cordova Alaska. Although the mine was a bust, producing only 9 oz. of silver and 16 oz. gold, Dr. William H. Chase, doctor and mayor of Cordova (for 24 terms) was able to attract investment in the mine for over 50 years.
